7 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day 2024

The 54th Earth Day is Monday, April 22. Not only is Earth Day designed to raise awareness about environmental issues, but it has also become a popular time for many communities to come together to clean up trash, plant trees, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature. What activities and projects can we take to improve the local environment?

1. Support pollinators

Bring native pollinators to your garden with flowers that attract pollinating bees.
Learn more about native bees and build a native bee house.

2. Clean up plastic in your community or local park

Go for a walk with a trash bag to help clean up the plastic you find and recycle the plastic you can.

3. Plant a tree

Trees absorb carbon dioxide and cool overheated areas. Planting an oak tree can bring in more insects and birds than an entire yard of plants.

4. Reduce, reuse and recycle garden waste

Reuse, recycle or return old plastic pots and trays. Plant biodegradable pots directly into the ground!

5. Stop using pesticides and chemicals in your garden

Pay attention to soil health and use organic soil amendments to turn poor soil into nutrient-rich soil so plants can thrive. Attract pest predators to your garden without the use of chemicals, save money, and protect your plants.

6. Conserve water

Use rain barrels to collect rainwater. If you have low-lying land near your home, consider planting a rain garden, which collects runoff, filters pollutants, and provides food and shelter for butterflies, songbirds, and other wildlife.

7. Get the kids involved

Pass on a love of nature and plants to your children. There are many opportunities for hands-on learning outdoors, such as growing sunflowers.

Happy Earth Day everyone!
